Aesthetic Overhead Line Structures

To propose new ideas to improve the design of gantry and cantilever structures which form an essential component of the electrification programme across the UK rail network and assist with electrification of the network through listed or otherwise protected areas.

Open Infrastructure

The successful finalists in the international design competition for new, aesthetically pleasing designs for the gantry and cantilever structures on the UK rail network have now been selected.

An event was held on the 7 May 2014 in the Great Hall at the National Railway Museum with the finalists announced as:

  • Bystrup Architecture, Design and Engineering, Denmark for their HST design
  • COBE, Denmark for their Tomahawk design
  • Moxon Architects with Mott MacDonald for the Integrated OLS design
  • IDOM UK with Alan Baxter & Associates and SEMI were also selected as Highly Commended

An exhibition of the ten shortlisted designs was held at the National Railway Museum and featured scale models of each design. The exhibition generated a great deal of interest amongst the general public with over 600 comments received on the different design approaches.

The finalists will now use the development funding to undertake detailed technical development of their design and consider the route to market.

'It has been a fascinating and enjoyable process and it was very clear to the panel that every shortlisted team had put a huge amount of hard work and dedication into their designs. We have selected three worthy finalists and I look forward to seeing each design developed further during the coming months.'
