The RSSB and Network Rail funded Future Railway Programme, in conjunction with the Department for Transport invited architects, engineers and designers worldwide to propose new design solutions to improve passenger rolling stock across the UK rail network.

Open Infrastructure

48 entries were initially received and a shortlist of ten designs selected to further develop their schemes.

The ten designs were selected in August 2014 and given until January 2015 to develop their schemes.

Following interviews with all shortlisted teams the panel identified the finalists for further funded development as:-

  • 42 Technology, Cambridgeshire
  • Andreas Vogler with the German Aerospace Center DLR, Germany
  • Priestman Goode, London

There will be £2.2 million in total available to fund the next stage development.

Three other schemes were highly commended and the client hopes to secure funding for development for these schemes in the future.

The Highly Commended are:-

  • Automotive Trim Developments Ltd, Coventry
  • Seymour Powell, London
  • Transport Design International (TDI) Worcestershire

“The Tomorrow’s Train Design Today Competition produced some very high quality proposals which are targeted at improving the rail sector and help to achieve the goals of the Rail Technology Strategy”.
