New car emissions tests
From 1st September, all new cars must now undergo tests measuring fuel consumption, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, carbon dioxide and particulates. The new tests are part of European regulations to tackle climate change and improve air quality in the UK.
1. Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (introduced 01/09/18)
The WLTP is conducted in laboratory-like conditions, testing a broad range of vehicle engine speeds, loads, temperatures and gear changes.
2. Real Driving Emissions (Due 01/09/2019)
The RDE tests cars on the road for the first time and analyses vehicles driven on rural, urban roads and motorways for a period of 90 minutes with equipment placed on the exhaust to give a more accurate measurement.
Transport Minister Paul Maynard has stated that in 2020 requirements will be tightened again and councils will be able to enforce more restrictions on the larger polluters.
As part of our service Tyson Cooper can help you understand how this may impact your next new car purchase and advice you of the best options to suit your needs.
Latest vehicle excise duty
Changes have been introduced to first-year Vehicle Excise Duty for most new diesel cars registered from 1st April 2018. The changes bridge the gap between now and September 2019 when all new cars must comply with Real Driving Emissions.
What does this mean if you're considering buying a new car right now?
For diesel cars with emissions under 130g/km the changes are minimal, no more than £40 in the first year and therefore unlikely to influence your final decision. Typical vehicles in this group include:
Nissan Qashqai, Volvo V40 & V60, Audi A3 & A4, Mercedes-Benz A Class & C Class
However, if your choice of vehicle sits above 130g/km then you may want to give this greater consideration as typical increases are between £300 and up to £500 for vehicles above 170g/km.
What are the alternative options?
Consider a petrol, hybrid or plug-in hybrid instead. Alternatively, commercial vehicles are not affected by the changes.
As part of the service provided Tyson Cooper can provide advice on selecting a low emission or electric vehicle from the whole of market to help you decide.
