Alteration to existing property

Greatspace , Peterel Field Business Village , Dipton Mill Road , HEXHAM , Northumberland , NE46 2JT

The Old Telephone Exchange near Great Whittington was recently advertised in the Guardian newspaper as a good investment for property development. As a result, Greatspace were commissioned to prepare a design for turning the structure into a holiday retreat. The proposal is to insulate, line out and convert the existing exchange into a galley kitchen with storage space, a contained bathroom and mezzanine bedroom. Architecturally this space is envisaged as a warm, cosy, timber lined environment that will make use of clever space-saving joinery and sliding pocket doors. The proposal includes a small extension to the North that is complimentary in character to the existing condition. The extension is sunken into the ground, bringing the eye level closer to the landscape and nature but also providing a sheltered, ’hunker down’ living space with log burner. Low-level fenestration will fill the space with natural light and provide a strong immersive connection to the surrounding nature.
