Poor spatial organisation arising from a previous extension left this family with a house that had 2 front doors. This lack of clarity created confusion for visitors and, by doubling up on circulation space, the internal arrangement was severely compromised. In close dialogue with the client, Hamer Way rationalised the layout to maximise every last bit of potential of their home. As a family of 6, lots of storage and flexible living space were priorities. The main entrance to the house is reset with an extension to the front. The arrival experience is improved by creating a meaningful entrance hallway with a boot room and ample cloaks storage, something that was previously lacking. Internal remodelling opens up the front and rear of the house to create an open-plan double-aspect living-dining space. The rear extension provides a generous dining area that doubles as homework space for the children, whilst the parents are close-by cooking in the kitchen. By removing a redundant chimney breast, full flexibility is achieved throughout the ground floor and much-needed floor space is given back at first-floor level, enlarging the existing bedrooms for storage. A loft conversion provides 2 additional bedrooms for their youngest children who are twins and a landing that becomes a home study. As part of the redevelopment, the client took the opportunity to install a new green energy heating system and solar panels. The house can now adapt to this family’s changing needs. The project is currently on site, due to complete in Winter 2020.
