Set in a picturesque valley in the Brendon Hills this property comprised a farmhouse with a series of traditional barns. Our brief was to refurbish and extend the farmhouse so as to create a comfortable and spacious modern family home, whilst retaining much of the character of the existing farmhouse, and to take advantage of sunlight and views. The adjacent barn was converted to create a light airy kitchen/dining room and sun- room, and connected to the main house by a large hallway. Oak beams and the use of natural materials complement the vernacular of the existing barn, resulting in a spacious open plan room that retains its barn-like feel and also fits well with 21st century living. In the main farmhouse the existing staircases were removed and a two storey curved arts and craft style extension created to accommodate a new staircase. This not only created a sense of space but also improved circulation and light around the home, and allowed for reorganisation and improvement of the rooms, including provision of en suite facilities and a further bathroom. The extensions, barn conversion and refurbishments, along with external landscaping combine to create a beautiful, elegant, yet comfortable, family home designed to be enjoyed as well as lived in.
