Set on a Devon farm overlooking a wooded valley and rolling hills, this new build farmhouse replaced an older farmhouse, which had been in need of modernisation. The original farmhouse had been built into the slope overlooking the valley, but the orientation of the house and direction of views from it failed to quite capture the beauty of its surroundings. The opportunity was therefore taken to start again rather than try to improve the existing house. Our brief was to create a new home that would be contemporary, light and energy efficient, integrating seamlessly within the farm complex and into the wider landscape, yet using a similar footprint to the original house and keeping the ‘upside down’ arrangement to take advantage of the views across the valley. Replacing the farmhouse gave us the opportunity to subtly shift the orientation of the house and to arrange the spaces so as to lead to carefully framed views throughout the home, surprising and delighting in all directions. The result is a contemporary home that, whilst having the appearance of being a modest rubble stone, slate roofed farmhouse, is also entangled with modern elements including zinc cladding, wildflower roofs, a sunken courtyard, spacious rooms and extensive glazing maximising views and natural light.
