In a lovely rural setting, this house had been added to over the years creating spaces that no longer worked well together and had little connection with the gardens. Our brief was to extend and rearrange the accommodation on the north side of the house so as to make better use of the space within the home, to add additional accommodation to support the needs of our clients’ growing family and to improve the relationship with the gardens and the views to the Quantock Hills beyond. By replacing the old extension and rearranging the interior spaces, the design sought to provide a balance between the materials of the existing house and the landscape, whilst offering a contemporary look for the extension. Materials were selected to reference, but also contrast with, the existing dwelling - where new walls finished in render show a clear relationship, but zinc clad elements look to contrast with the existing house’s timber windows and doors. The key views across the garden informed the offsetting of the axes of the three gables, resulting in the rotated forms that frame views and also create connected rooms within singe and double-height space. The result is a contemporary home with clean lines and simple, flowing spaces, that is also light, bright and well connected to its gardens. A new garage was also included in the scheme
