The client's brief was to design a new, 7,000 sqft house in the classical style but incorporating the best practices of modern construction methods. The design is therefore based around a 5 bay Georgian style country house with additional wings, garden room and garage annexe. The construction method uses a highly insulated, air-tight timber frame with handmade brick external cladding to the walls and a combination of Cumbrian slate, handmade clay tile and sheet lead roof coverings. Facing brickwork is laid in Flemish bond with traditional hydraulic lime mortar, window cills are in dressed limestone. The ground floor consists of a suspended beam and block slab on piled foundations. The principle means of heating is via geothermal coils laid out under the front lawn. Solar thermal panels on the roof feed into the hot water system and cold water is drawn directly from a borehole in the garden. Background ventilation is delivered via a whole house mechanical heat recovery system. The house sits within large, established grounds with wonderful views over the Kennett valley.
