Newry, Mourne and Down
New Build
2nd Floor New Mill , Conway Mill , 5-7 Conway Street , Belfast , County Antrim , BT13 2DE , United Kingdom
A proposal for a new dwelling in rural county Down. A collection of new spaces and forms cluster around a converted barn and step across the rocky hillside. The dwelling will be a reinterpretation of the historic Ulster farmstead cluster. These dwellings are typically characterised by a linear pitched roof form with surrounding subservient forms clustered around. These buildings open to clearly defined intimate external ‘streets’, ‘yards’ or ‘paddocks’. The resulting seemingly ad–hoc arrangement is deeply responsive to immediate topography and micro–climate and the composition is read as an abstract collection of shapes and materials.
