Surrounded by a large and beautiful garden, this prominent Edwardian house is situated in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. The owners approached us with a brief to substantially extend and completely redesign the interior of the house, while respecting and celebrating its period character. While trying to design a distinctly modern extension and maintain a clear separation between the old and the new, we soon discovered that the scale of the extension required to fulfil the brief would be too large to remain subordinate to the main house. We devised a two-stage design to help us deal with this challenge of proportion. The first stage involved extending and restoring the house in an Edwardian style. This resulted in a larger, better proportioned house with improved symmetry. This step enabled us to reevaluate the extension and internal design with fresh eyes and allowed us to follow our familiar inside-out, scenario based approach to develop a truly bespoke scheme. The main entrance is the start of a gradual journey through Edwardian reception rooms towards the modern kitchen and dining areas marked by a subtle change in level. A strong and immersive connection to the garden is maintained through large glazed openings and the use of projecting window seats.
