Study of the Amphiteatrum Castrensis, Rome: plan

RIBA125430
NOTES: This drawing is numbered X/17 verso in the Burlington-Devonshire Collection. The Amphiteatrum Castrensis was located near to the Castra Praetoria, the great camp of the Praetorian Guard, built by Emperor Tiberius in 23 AD. The amphitheatre was probably built at the same time in order to provide entertainment for the soldiers.
