NOTES: The cathedral, also known as the Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral), was built by Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor, in 792-805. Most of the masonry dates from the 9th century but the upper part was added in the 19th century. The porch dates from the 17th century.
