NOTES: Construction on the Norman cathedral began in 1120 under Bishop Urban and was completed by 1290. The building was damaged in the rebellion of Owen Glendower in 1400 and again by Parliamentarian troops during the English Civil War after which the south-west tower collapsed. The cathedral was extensively restored in the 18th century when the tower was rebuilt and the spire added. The restoration was completed by John Prichard in 1843-1869. The cathedral was severely damaged during the Cardiff Blitz of January 1941. The necessary extensive reconstruction was carried out by George Pace and completed by 1958.
