Notes NOTES: Elizabeth ascended the throne upon the death of her father, King George VI, on 6 February 1952 and was crowned Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June 1953. The artists and designers Christopher and Robin Ironside designed the huge coat of arms which was the centrepiece of the coronation decorations in Whitehall. Sir Hugh Casson was the consulting architect for the coronation decorations.
