NOTES: This is the only example in the area of the many smart brick classical style houses built in the London suburbs in the late 17th century. Built c.1694 for Dormer Shepperd, a wealthy London merchant, this Queen Anne house was acquired c. 1714 by Dame Mary Gayer, widow of the East India Company's governor of Bombay, whose monogram is entwined in the iron gateway executed by Robert Bakewell c. 1715
