NOTES: No. 39 was the home of the composer W. S. Gilbert of Gilbert & Sullivan, who commissioned Ernest George & Peto in 1882. The ship is believed to be a model of H. M. S. Squirrel, sailed in by Sir Humphrey Gilbert, an Elizabethan mariner, from whom W. S. Gilbert claimed descent.
