Albert Hall Mansions, Kensington Gore, London: plans of proposed design

NOTES: The builder Thomas Hussey took a 99-year building lease on the site between Lowther Lodge and the Albert Hall in Kensington. His architects, Driver & Rew, produced their first design for a mansion block of flats in 1876 which the 1851 Exhibition Commissioners, the freeholders of the land, did not approve of. They produced a modified design in 1877, but the Commissioners wanted 'some distinguished architect' to be involved and Richard Norman Shaw was brought in as consultant. A further design was produced of which Shaw's contribution was probably mostly the exterior and Driver & Rew's the interior planning. This project was illustrated in Building News, vol. 34, 1878 Jan. 25. Nothing came of this design and in 1879 Shaw began the designs for the Albert Hall Mansions as built.
