NOTES: Castel del Monte, a World Heritage site, is situated on a small hill close to the monastery of Santa Maria del Monte. It was built by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II in 1229-1249 and was used primarily as a hunting lodge. It was later turned into a prison and used as a refuge during the plague.
