NOTES: A fortified stronghold existed on this site from the 10th century. It was destroyed in 1076 and was rebuilt as a fortress by Henry II of England in the late 12th century. The castle took on its quadrangle appearance after 1246 when it passed to Charles of Anjou. Further additions and alterations were made in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was acquired by the municipality in 1906, underwent restoration, and has since housed museums.
