Fragment of the coffin of Sir Christopher Wren, Saint Paul's Cathedral, London, showing container and letter of authentification

NOTES: This wooden fragment originally belonged to the architect George Adam Burn. In a statement written by Burn in 1851, kept with the fragment, he explains: "This coffin lays in the crypt of the cathedral of St. Paul's / under the first window from the east end on / the south side of the choir. / The accompanying piece was broken accidentally / from the foot of Sir Christopher's coffin in making / preparations for the interrment of Constantina Susan / Burgoyne Wren, from Bromley, Kent, who died July / 10th/51 aged 93 ? and was buried July 18th/51 / Her coffin lays with the head to the front of that of Sir Christopher's. / The fragment was given to me August 20th 1851 / by Mr. Richards Verger of the Cathedral and then of No.3 St. Martin's Place". The coffin appears to have been covered in baize and then nailed with gilt headed studs. Two partially corroded studs remain attached to this fragment, together with a little cloth of indeterminate colour.
