Stowe: a description of the magnificent house and gardens (London, 1769) NOTES: Stowe Castle was built in parkland two miles east of the gardens in the 1730s, possibly to designs by James Gibbs. The Wolfe Obelisk was erected in memory of General James Wolfe who was killed while fighting the French in Canada in 1759.
