NOTES: Begun around 80 BC the Amphitheatre was the earliest permanent stone structure of its kind. The plan shows (above) a conjectural reconstruction and (below) the visible remains at the time. This drawing probably dates from 1816 or 1817 when other drawings of Pompeii in the Royal Institute of British Architects are dated. Goldicutt was in Italy between 1815 and 1819 collecting material for books he later published.
