NOTES: This drawing was made for engraving by Colen Campbell for inclusion in his Vitruvius Britannicus (London, 1715), Vol. I, pl. 12. See RIBA32759 for the engraving made from this drawing. This palace is the only remaining component of the Palace of Whitehall. It was built for James I specifically to provide an appropriate setting for a new and elaborate type of court entertainment, the masque.
