Basilica of San Francesco, Assisi: the entrance to the lower church showing the Renaissance porch protecting the Gothic portal

NOTES: This porch was added to the Gothic portal of 1271 by Francesco di Bartolomeo di Pietrasanta in 1486-87. The design and supervision of the construction of the Romanesque lower basilica, built between 1228 and 1230, is attributed to Frate Elia Bombardone. The Gothic style lateral chapels were added towards the end of the 13th century.
