Tropical Bird House, Dudley Zoo, Dudley Castle: the promenade terrace and the belvedere below

RIBA49457
Lubetkin & Tecton
NOTES: The semi-circular tropical birds' house stands above another drum of smaller diameter that houses the zoo's electricity transformer. In 1985 a thorough restoration was carried out by the Planning and Architecture Department of Dudley Metropolitan Borough - the beginning of a long term project to renovate many of the 15 listed Lubetkin buildings at Dudley. The restoration was carried out with Lubetkin's advice and approval.

Elephant House, Dudley Zoo, Dudley Castle: the upper terrace

RIBA49465
Lubetkin & Tecton
NOTES: This building was near to the castle and thus the Ancient Monuments Department of the Office of Works insisted that it should be as low and inconspicuous as possible. Lubetkin and Tecton therefore made the top of the building almost level with the road around the castle moat. The two elephant houses were sited in the centre flanked on one side by a camel house and on the other by a stable for Shetland ponies. A cantilevered terrace was provided splitting the upper and lower levels.
