NOTES: The inscription on this drawing explains that the three sculpted heads shown on this section of the porch are said to represent Henry III, Queen Eleanor and the Bishop of Winchester. They were probably carved to commemorate the residency of Henry III, Queen Eleanor and their court in York during the Christmas of 1251, on the occasion of the marriage of Henry's daughter, the Princess Margaret, to the Scottish monarch Alexander, by Archbishop Gray of York. The carved head of a bishop may therefore depict Gray.
