NOTES: Built on the site of a ruined Saxon cathedral, this cathedral was begun by Lanfranc, the first Norman archbishop, in Norman style and consecrated in 1077. The nave was rebuilt in Perpendicular to designs by Henry Yevele in 1377-1405, but the Norman and Early English east end were left in place. The south-west tower was rebuilt by Thomas Mapilton between 1424 and 1434. The original Romanesque north-west tower remained until 1832 when it was demolished and replaced by a matching replica of Mapilton's tower. Bell Harry Tower, the central bell tower, also in Perpendicular style, was completed between 1494 and 1505 by John Wastell.
