NOTES: Built on the site of a ruined Saxon cathedral, this cathedral was begun by Lanfranc, the first Norman archbishop, in Norman style and consecrated in 1077. The nave was rebuilt in Perpendicular in 1377-1405, but the Norman and Early English east end were left in place. The central bell tower, also in Perpendicular style, was completed between 1494 and 1505 by John Wastell.
