NOTES: Carlton Towers was built as extension to Carlton Hall, the seat of the Stapleton family whose lineage dates back to the 14th century. The house was designed by Edward Welby Pugin in 1871, but only the outside was completed by his death in 1874. John Francis Bentley was commissioned to design the interiors, particularly the state rooms, of which the Venetian Drawing Room is one.
