NOTES:
This massive octagonal castle crowning an isolated peak of the western Murge, was built by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen c. 1240-1249. It was purchased by the Italian State in 1876 in a state of ruin and was thereafter restored.
