NOTES: This monastery was founded by Patriarch Nikon in 1656 as a patriarchal residence on the outskirts of Moscow. The site on the River Istra was chosen for its resemblance to the River Jordan in the Holy Land. The Cathedral, built in 1658-1685 by Nikon and Sergei Turchaninov, was one of a complex of monastic buildings that was known as the New Jerusalem. In 1723 the westernmost wall failed and the cathedral was subsequently rebuilt by Karl Blank and Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1756-1761. The cathedral was severely damaged by German soldiers during the battle of Moscow in 1941. It has since been restored.
