NOTES: Designed by Ange-Jacques Gabriel as a summer royal residence for King Louis XV and one of the three seats of royal government, construction began on this chateau in 1751. Work was continued after Gabriel's death by his pupil, Le Dreux de La Chatre, and was completed in 1788. It was restored by Napoleon I.
