NOTES: This town on the northwest coast of Corsica began as a fishing port. It became a stronghold only after the arrival of the Genovese when, in 1268, Giovaninello de Loreto, a Corsican nobleman, built this huge citadel on the windswept rock (Calvus) overlooking the port and named it Calvi.
