NOTES: This is a contemporary photograph of an original drawing. An international competition was held in 1872 for a design for the proposed Reichstag which received 103 submissions and was won by Ludwig Bohnstedt of Gotha. As the authorities were unable to purchase the land for which the building had been planned nothing came of this design. In 1882, after the land required was finally purchased, a new international competition was held and the winner, Paul Wallot, saw his building open in 1894.
