NOTES: The village of Letcombe Bassett is located in a dip on the edge of the Berkshire Downs. The area by the stream, which rises at one end of the village and flows towards Letcombe Regis, was used extensively for watercress cultivation. This village was the subject of a controversial investigation in 1961 by its local authority into the condition of its housing and its future development, which resulted in a quarter of its vernacular and traditional housing being deemed unfit for habitation and thus condemned. Given the declining population and the difficulty of the drainage in the village, such housing was not to be replaced in the village but on a new housing site on higher ground above the village and in nearby Letcombe Regis.
