NOTES: Sir Charles Barry was the architect of the square, completed in 1845. The four bronze lions in each corner were designed by Sir Edwin Landseer and added in 1868. A new layout of the square was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1939 for the Ministry of Works, but was only completed in 1948.
