NOTES: This is one of a set of theoretical designs attributed to James Smith and found among drawings by Colen Campbell acquired in 1966 from Newby Hall and Studley Priory, Yorkshire. Whether Campbell acquired them as a pupil of Smith's (30 years his senior) or bought them from him when Smith was in financial difficulties is unknown. They do demonstrate Smith's interest in Palladian architecture which seems to antedate Campbell's and very likely goes back to Smith's time in Italy during the 1660s or 1670s.
