Designs for painted panels for the decoration of the 'Great Bookcase', made for William Burges's house and offices at 15 Buckingham Street, London: the central panel represents 'Poetry' and shows Sappho and Phaon in a boat

NOTES: Known as the 'Great Bookcase' this richly decorated piece of furniture featured painted panels depicting stories from the Bible and ancient mythology, together with motifs incorporating birds, butterflies and other insects. The paintings were executed by a number of artists, including Edward J. Poynter, Henry Holiday together and Burges himself, as indicated in this design. The bookcase was later housed in Burges's library at Tower House, Melbury Road, London.
