NOTES: This drawing is a subcontractors' drawing by 'Archibald D. Dawnay and Sons' for the steelwork. Evelyn House was a speculative development with shops on the ground floor and offices on the floors above. It is slightly less ornate than its counterpart, Norwich House on High Holborn, although Holden makes striking use of oversized details such as dentils and triglyphs. Rathbone Place is given the plainer facade. Shop fronts are of bronze with marble surrounds (a letter referring to these from the Birmingham Guild is in the RIBA Collections); most of the originals survive. Otherwise the building is of Portland stone with slate roofs - best Bangor Countess on the back, Westmorland green slates on the front - and leaded dormers. The Adams & Holden 'Specification of Works' for Evelyn House, dated May 1909, is in the RIBA Collections.
