NOTES: An extension of the railway from Bridport to West Bay (formerly known as Bridport Harbour) was completed by 1883 and the West Bay Building Company was formed to build hotels and lodging houses in West Bay in order to promote tourism. A design was prepared for a site on East Cliff, but the owner, General Augustus Pitt-Rivers, would not sell it for a sum the company felt it could afford to pay (see RIBA126192). Prior prepared a further design for this site, already owned by the company, and the Quay Terrace (now called Pier Terrace and Grade II listed) was constructed in 1884-1885.
