NOTES: A. W. N. Pugin won a limited competition in 1839 to design a large Roman Catholic church in Southwark for the growing Irish population of the area with, in addition, a house for four clergy, and schools for 300 boys and 200 girls. Pugin's cathedral was consecrated in 1848 and following the completion of the works on what is now called Archbishop's House and Cathedral House, Frederick A. Walters prepared a program of restoration and redecoration in the cathedral itself between 1888 and 1905.
