NOTES: At a meeting in November 1917, the Old Cliftonians decided that a permanent memorial should be erected to commemorate the fallen of the Great War. Building began in August 1921 and the unveiling ceremony took place on June 30, 1922. It is unusual among Holden's memorials in being in the Gothic style, no doubt influenced by the existing buildings. It is built of red sandstone with the carving of the names and inscription under the arch by Eric Gill.
