NOTES: This is a contemporary photograph of an original drawing. The design adopted for this building was by A. E. Johnson with the Chief Architect of the Public Works Department, William Wardell, known to have influenced the final design. The initial two storey building was completed by 1867 and illustrated in the Builder in 1871 (credited to Wardell). As a result of severe overcrowding a new design by Johnson added a third storey and tower by 1887.
