NOTES: Gripsholm Castle was built by King Gustav I on the site of a 14th century medieval fortress from 1526. The castle was renovated in the late 18th century by King Gustav III after being used as prison. It was heavily and controversially restored by the architect Johan Fredrick Lilljekvist in 1889-1894 back to its medieval appearance. It is now a museum.
