NOTES: Thornton Hough was transformed into a model estate village firstly by Joseph Hirst, a textile manufacturer from Wilshaw, who provided a parish church, a vicarage, schools and a number of houses between 1866 and 1870, and then later and more importantly by William Hesketh Lever, first Viscount Leverhulme. Adding to Hirst's contributions he rebuilt the rest of the village using architects employed by him at Port Sunlight - William and Segar Owen, Douglas and Fordham, Grayson and Ould, and Lomax-Simpson. This house is a typical example of the half-timbered style used throughout the village.
