NOTES: Founded in the 4th century, the monastery consists of two churches. The oldest is the single nave basilica of St Karapet (i.e. Holy Forerunner, John the Baptist), which dates from this period, though much restored between 1652-1734. Adjoining the early basilica is the cathedral (1216-1221) to which was added the gavit (vestry or narthex) in 1250.
