NOTES: Construction on the Marienkirche began in c.1200 and took over 150 years to complete. The Romanesque Petrikirche was completed in the 13th century with Gothic additions made in the 16th century. The Holstentor, the west gate of the old city, was designed by the city builder, Heinrich Helmstede, and built in 1478. It is one of two towered gates remaining from the old fortifications, the other being the Burgtor of 1444.
