NOTES: Tusculum was a Roman city in the Alban Hills. After its destruction in 1191 it was used as a source of stone and it became overgrown with woodland and pasturage. As mentioned in the note on the drawing, in 1806 Lucien Bonaparte sponsored the first campaign of excavation on the site. In the lower corner of the drawing is a portion of the small theatre which was on the site. The measurements for this drawing were made by Parke and Frederick Catherwood.
