NOTES: This is one of three preliminary designs pasted into a copy of W.H. Leeds, 'The Travellers' Club House, Studies and Examples of the Modern School of English Architecture' (London, 1839). The book contains an essay on 'Modern English Architecture' by W.H. Leeds. Inserted in the volume are the three drawings, allegedly preliminary designs for the Club House by Barry himself. The Travellers' Club, won in a limited competition in 1829, was not only Barry's first major building but the first significant instance of the Italian style in his work.
